As the head Air-to-Air Intercept instructor at TOPGUN, one of the lessons I taught was that when aircraft start an intercept, typically between 100 and 200 miles apart, and travelling at speeds of over 800 miles per hour, they have just under eight minutes until they meet at the “merge.”  The pilots’ well-timed actions and sound application of tactics in that short time are crucial to their success.  However, just as important is the time and effort spent preparing for the “intercept.”
